Cannavaro out of EURO 2008

This is really sad news, as Italy captain and Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro will be missing EURO 2008 as he picked up an ankle injury when he colided with Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini in training. He will probably need surgery, so there’s no chance to recover for any match of the tournament.

Italy play against France, Holland and Romania in group stages at EURO 2008.

Cannavaro proves his character! Chiellini was simply mentally down, following Cannavaro’s injury. Cannavaro consolated him, saying:

I comforted him. He was broken. I told him that it wasn’t his fault. We lost a player – it’s not worth losing a second.

A true captain…

Would you exchange Robinho for C. Ronaldo?

Many rumours regarding Cristiano Ronaldo‘s transfer to Real Madrid appeared last weeks. Some say that the price would be 90 million €, some say that the deal would involve Ramos, Diarra, Robinho and 50 million €, even C. Ronaldo has put his future under shadow.

Robinho is a very interresting player, he is only 24 and I remember that in 2005 when he arrived, I was excited about his arrival, I’ve seen him play at Santos and I was amazed by his skills and technique. The transfer was pretty doubtful, because Santos didn’t wanted to let him go, only for 30 million € or so, wich was his release clause. Robinho was crazy about the transfer, he refuzed to train with Santos, was anxious to sign for Madrid. If I’m correct, the transfer was done in the last day of the summer transfer window.
He seemed to be the exactly what Madrid needs in order to win trophees again. His debut against Cadiz was incredible, he came in as a substitute and was involved in most of Madrid’s attacks. We won 2-1. Several other important matches came and his influence in the game was huge, he has the technique, skills and vision to decide a match all by himself.

It’s pretty obvious that Real Madrid are keen to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu. The latest rumours about this transfer is an exchange between Ronaldo and Robinho. It seems that Manchester United are interrested in Robinho, Real Madrid are interrested in Ronaldo. Ronaldo wants to play for Real Madrid (as he says), Robinho wouldn’t mind to play for another team (altough he says his desire is to stay in Madrid).

So what’s going on? Is Real Madrid willing to let Robinho go, in exchange for Cristiano Ronaldo? Would this transfer be good for Real Madrid? Technically, Robinho and Ronaldo are pretty much the same, they both have skills. Ronaldo is faster than Robinho, but Robinho is a better team-player. Robinho is now familiar with spanish footbal, Ronaldo isn’t. This could be important, as Ricardo Quaresma, another great portuguese player (with great technique and skills) played for Barcelona, but didn’t manage to impress.

If this rumour is true, I hope that Real Madrid won’t agree. Robinho is young, has made his impact on Madrid’s game and has great potential for the future.

Robben & Sneijder score against Wales

Holland outclassed Wales 2-0 today, with both goals scored by Real Madrid players Robben and Sneijder. After Ruud van Nistelrooij’s goal against Denmark, the 2 dutchmen scored for Holland in a game they dominated from one end to another.

Robben scored the first, by outspeeding 3 Wales players, netting past the keeper. Wesley Sneijder added his name on the scoreline by scoring a superb goal from a free kick.

Holland will clash Italy, France and Romania in group stages at EURO 2008.

Robinho providential as Brazil win

Brazil and Canada clashed yesterday in a friendly match, ending with the victory of Brazil, 3-2. Julio Baptista and Robinho were in the starting 11 for Brazil, but Robinho was the providential man for Brazil, as he set up the first goal and scored another for Brazil.
Just 3 minutes in, Robinho dribled 2 canadian players and served Diego, who scored past the canadian keeper. After Canada’s equaliser, Sevilla’s Luis Fabiano headed in to make it 2-1 just before the break. Canada equalized again, just for Robinho to make it 3-2, when he took advantage from a big mistake of the canadian defense; he dribled past the keeper and scored into an empty net.

Ruud van Nistelrooij scores in friendly match

Netherlands 1-1 Denmark
Ruud van Nistelrooij scored Holland’s single goal in a friendly match against Denmark. Other 2 Real Madrid miedfielders played for Holland, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder. Robben made a great match, being if not the best, one of the best players on field.

This was a preparation match for Holland before EURO 2008. Holland will play against Italy, France and Romania in group stages.

Why Raul is my favorite player

He began he’s carreer at Real Madrid in 1994, in a game against Zaragoza. He didn’t score on his debut, but did it next week, against arch-rivals Atletico Madrid, in a game played at Santiago Bernabeu. Since then, he started breaking many records:

  • top scorer for Spain national team with 44 goals
  • UEFA Champions League all-time scorer with 61 goals
  • 2nd goal-scorer for Real Madrid in history, after Alfredo di Stefano, with 292 goals
  • 2nd most appearances in Real Madrid shirt, with 655 appearances

He won everything with Real Madrid, and has many individual trophees as well. In my opinion, Raul is the best captain Real Madrid ever had, one of the most important figures in world footbal and probably the most successful in spanish footbal. His attitude on field is exemplar, he is fair play, has gone for 3 seasons without receving a yellow card and has never been sent off. Rarely he’s angry on field, rarely I see him protesting about referee decisions.

He wasn’t called up in spanish national side for EURO 2008. Luis Aragones hasn’t motivated his decision, when asked why Raul wasn’t called up, he’s very “professional” response was “I’m the coach, what I say goes.“. Raul didn’t express his anger about this decision, never criticised the coach. He found the strength to wish the players good luck and support them.

How many players, wich had such a great season, scoring 23 goals in all competitions, would have said this? How many players wouldn’t have criticized the coach about this foolish decision?

Raul was in Bucharest a few days ago, I had the chance to see him play, he even gave me an autograph. Altough it was only a friendly match, more like a charitable event, his commitment and devotion to the game of footbal were amazing.
There were times when Real Madrid won nothing, when players were criticized, many coaches fired, people were angry. I ask only this: how can you be mad on someone who devoted his whole life to Real Madrid?

I only hope that Raul will have the chance to win a trophy with Spain sometimes, because he’s 31 and time is running up for him. When he will be recalled, I will be Spain’s supporter to win the World Cup or a European Championship.

A true idol

Diarra stays

Real Madrid defensive miedfielder, Diarra will play for Real Madrid next season, despite the interrest from Inter Milano. The Mali captain seemed to have lost the battle with Gago for a place in starting eleven, and because of that, he’s morale was pretty affected, being unsure about his future. Altough he permanently stated that he wants to continue in Madrid, his situation was unclear. Speculations that Real Madrid would sign Roma’s Daniele de Rossi or Alberto Aquilani made Diarra’s future even more unclear.

Real Madrid sports director, Pedja Mijatovic had a meeting with Bernd Schuster and agreed that Diarra is needed next season in the Madrid squad, as he is a important piece in Schuster’s plan.

Another theory is that Inter Milano is no more interrested in signing Diarra, mainly because ex-coach Mancini was sacked yesterday and the new coach seems to be Mourinho. The portuguese manager would be interrested to land Chelsea’s Michael Essien.

Schuster: Robinho stays

In an interview for spanish newspaper AS, Real Madrid chief Bernd Schuster stated that Robinho will not leave the club this summer, despite interest from several english and italian clubs. It is well known that Chelsea are willing to pay 35 million€ to land the Brazilian forward to Stamford Bridge. Altough Robinho has lost his form and place in starting 11 in latest games, Schuster states that Robinho is happy in Madrid and both club and player want the collaboration to continue.

Robinho suffered a stomach injury several months ago, before the Champions League match against Roma, and since then it appears that he is out of form. He was also involved in a scandal with prostitutes among other brazilian players, scandal that affected his relationship with the club even worse.

Schuster spoke about Arsenal’s Hleb, stating that Real Madrid is interested in the player, and Cristiano Ronaldo, wich “would be welcome and would find his place in Madrid team“.
